Thank you, Senator Rockefeller!

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) warned the coal industry Friday (Feb 4, 2011) that it must work to find solutions to the many problems facing the fossil fuel or risk being “left behind.” Thank you, Senator.

This forward looking, embrace the future, and un-obstructionist view is fantastic!  Look, it’s only a matter of time.  Why?  We have watch the auto industry drag its feet on seatbelts, catalytic converters, airbags, you name it – only to lose out to popular opinion based on common sense and LAW.  We have watch the impact of clean water laws in a fraction of a lifetime make lakes swimmable (Lake Erie), rivers not be combustible (Cuyahoga River, Ohio), and secret chemical dumps prevented from further pollution of ground water (Love Canal).  This is the power of people making cases, and bringing it to the lawmakers.  Coal pollutes – yes.  But it can be minimized to pollute.  It is cheap and that is good because cheap energy is essential for economic growth.  So, the Senator from West Virginia has is right – get with the program because the coal industry will lose sooner or later if it does not reform.
